Five-spice steak
This Asian main course uses Chinese five-spice powder to season a sirloin steak, which is seared and served with a rich black bean sauce. The dish is accompanied by bok choi, wilted and tossed with sesame oil, creating a complete supper. It is designed to serve two people and can be ready in 35 minutes, making it a practical yet flavourful dinner option.
Ingredients
- 2 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
- 1 large sirloin steak (about 300g/10oz)
- 3 heads bok choi or pak choi, halved
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 100g sachet black bean sauce
- 2 garlic cloves finely minced
- 1 small piece fresh root ginger finely minced
- 2 tbsp rice wine vinegar
Method
- Combine the sauce components in a small saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer until warmed through. Get a griddle pan very hot. Coat the steak thoroughly with the five-spice powder, then add a little salt and pepper. Cook the steak for 2-3 mins on each side to your preferred doneness, then set it aside to rest.
- While the steak rests, simmer or steam the bok or pak choi for 4-5 mins until it has softened but retains some crunch. Dress the greens with a few tbsps of the prepared sauce and the sesame oil. Slice the rested steak into thick pieces. Plate the steak with a small pot of sauce, the dressed greens and some steamed rice.
